THE PROTEIN MAKER THAT DOES A CELL GOOD!
A Ribosome is the part of the cell that makes proteins which is found in all life forms. In the diagram to the right of an animal cell, the Ribosome is #3. Below is a diagram of a plant cell showing the Ribosome:
Ribosomes are unique because they are found in both eukaryotes and prokaryotes. Eukaryotes are cells with an organized nucleus and a membrane. Prokaryotes are cells without an organized nuclei. Ribosomes can be found in many places in a Eukaryotic cell, including the cytosol, the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), or the nuclear membrane. Robisomes float free in the cytosol in prokaryotes.
Ribosomes connect one amino acid at a time, building long chains called polypeptides. Polypeptides become part of a larger protein. Protein is important to the body because it is used to build and repair cells and tissue. Protein is the main building block of our bones, muscles, skin and blood. Our hair and our nails are mostly made of protein. Protein is also used to make enzymes and antibodies which help our bodies fight off infection.

Structure
Ribosomes are made up of two parts in Eukaryotes called the 60-S (large) and 40-S (small) subunits. Prokaryotic cells have ribosomes that are smaller called the 50-S and 30-S subunits. Scientists have used this difference in size to create antibiotics that can destroy a bacterial infection without harming the cells of an infected person.
It is also important to note that Ribosomes can have different structures in different species.

FUNCTION
The main function of Ribosomes is to act as the site for messenger RNA (mRNA) to change into amino acids.
When cells need to make a protein, mRNA is created in the nucleus. The mRNA is sent out of the nucleus to the Ribosomes. The large subunit and small subunit come together, lock onto the mRNA and start the building of protein. The mRNA provides directions and the ribosome builds a long amino acid chain called a polypeptide, which becomes part of a larger protein.
